The Town of Essex was created on 1 April 1999 by the amalgamation of the communities of Essex, Harrow, Colchester North, and Colchester South. Each community has a distinct history prior to amalgamation.

The Town of Kingsville is rich in history and Victorian era architecture. Primarily an agricultural community nestled along the north shore of Lake Erie, the Town has declared itself geographically the Southernmost Downtown area in Canada.

The Town of Lakeshore was established in 1999 by the amalgamation of the former Town of Belle River and the former Townships of Maidstone, Rochester, Tilbury North and Tilbury West.

The Town of LaSalle was originally located on the bank of the Detroit River on what is known as the "Nautical Mile" in Essex County.  Today the Town of LaSalle is a rapidly urbanizing municipality situated in the northwest quadrant of Essex County, bordered by the Town of Amherstburg to the south, the town of Tecumseh to the east and the City of Windsor to the north.

The Town of Tecumseh is rapidly growing and offers many fine restaurants, shopping areas, medical facilities, and has a growing industrial and commercial sector. Tecumseh is well known for its friendly hospitality and community events.
